  1. Chandrayaan Missions The Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008 was India’s first lunar exploration mission, and it made history by confirming the presence of water molecules on the Moon. The follow-up mission, Chandrayaan-2 in 2019, aimed for a soft landing on the Moon's south pole. Although the lander did not succeed, the orbiter remains active and is gathering valuable data.

  2. Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission) In 2014, ISRO became the first space agency to successfully place a spacecraft into Mars’ orbit on its very first attempt. This mission, also known as Mangalyaan, was notable for being one of the most cost-effective Mars missions, costing just $74 million.

  3. PSLV: The Workhorse of ISRO One of ISRO’s greatest achievements is the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), often referred to as the “workhorse” of Indian space missions. It has been used to launch satellites for various purposes, including communication, weather monitoring, and Earth observation. Notably, the PSLV set a world record in 2017 by launching 104 satellites in a single mission.

  4. Gaganyaan: India’s Human Spaceflight Program ISRO is now preparing for its first crewed mission to space, known as Gaganyaan, which aims to send Indian astronauts into orbit. This mission represents India’s entry into the elite club of countries capable of human spaceflight.

  1. Cost-Efficiency: ISRO is known for achieving its space exploration goals at a fraction of the cost compared to other agencies like NASA. For instance, the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) was far less expensive than comparable missions, earning ISRO praise for its frugal approach to space technology.

  2. Innovation: ISRO consistently demonstrates innovation, whether it’s developing homegrown technologies for satellite launching or planning complex missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan with minimal budgets.

  3. Commercial Ventures: Through its commercial arm, Antrix Corporation, ISRO has emerged as a key player in the global satellite launch market, launching satellites for countries all around the world.

The Future of ISRO

Looking ahead, ISRO has ambitious plans. Besides the Gaganyaan mission, India is planning a Chandrayaan-3 mission to retry a soft landing on the Moon. There’s also talk of exploring Venus and developing a space station.
